TE 847 - Advanced Methods for Teaching Language Arts
Instructor: K. Moxley

This course focused on teach methods for language arts, specifically the Book Club method.  We studied how to create successful book clubs and literacy circles in our classrooms and participated in a few as well.  During the class we read and participated in book clubs for three different novels, each time trying a different role within the group.  This class gave me some great ideas about how to integrate reading journals into my kindergarten class.  They are never too young to learn how to discuss literature!

TE 844 - Classroom Literacy Assessment
Instructor: A. Dodge

This course was one of my personal favorites and initiated immediate changes into my classroom.  During this course, we were taught various ways to use informal and formal literacy assessments to inform and modify instruction.  We also learned how to examine assessments for various qualities such as validity and reliability.  One assignment during this course that impacted my teaching was the creation of a literacy organizational system.  I focused my literacy assessments on only those that were truly helpful and how I would use the data to modify my instruction.

TE 836 - Awards & Classics of Children's Literature
Instructor: L. Apol

This course was taken as a part of the literacy concentration for the MAED program.  In the scope of the course we studied criteria for awards of children's literature and read several winners.  Then we discussed criteria for a piece of literature to be considered a classic and read several classic works.  In the end, we critically examined the role of award or classic designation in relation to children's literature.  I wrote a final paper which summarized my realizations and beliefs about children's literature in response to things I had learned.
